Following the devastation of the Rodney King riots in L.A. in 1992, the City granted the citizens use of 14 acres of barren land for a community garden. In no time at all, the bleak landscape had turned into a green oasis amid the burnt out city landscape. The story that is revealed in Scott Hamilton Kennedy's film is an amazing story of community spirit and determination overcoming all odds, one that takes the viewer into the heart of the drama.
Scott Hamilton Kennedy's Documentary Reveals the Heart of A Community in South Central L.A.
Growing papayas, bananas, corn, cilantro, avocados, tomatoes and a lush variety of produce, the 14 acres loaned to the citizens of the City became a center of life and life-producing food. It also was a bit of independence and pride for many in the community. It improved their standard of living and increased their sense of empowerment. But when a backroom deal is forged, even the City's financial interests appear to be shelved. Why would the City sell the property to someone they had already purchased it from a dozen years earlier, and at a loss? Why was the deal done in private with no warning to the farmers? Is the City for the people, or for the developers?
