The three tops teams in the West Coast Conference faced road tests Thursday night, and each part of the trio prevailed to set up what could be an intriguing race toward the finish with just over half the league season remaining, en route to the conference tournament in Las Vegas during the first week of March.

Saint Mary's (5-1) and Portland (4-2) maintained pace with still unbeaten in WCC play Gonzaga (6-0) by scoring double-digit victories over Pepperdine and San Francisco, respectively, while the Zags rallied to avoid an upset at the hands of Santa Clara as the league begins to take shape.

The Bulldogs, currently ranked eighth in the ESPN Coaches poll, struggled to find an offensive flow in the South Bay Thursday, trailing by double figures past the midway point of the second half before showing why they are a team that could cause serious match up problems for many teams come tournament time.
