Often, schools will hold open houses the night before school begins. Other schools hold a back-to-school night within the first two weeks of school. This is usually the first time teachers meet the families of the students, and is a critical night for creating strong teacher to parent relationships. Middle school is a time of student independence, but parent involvement is still key to student success. Be prepared and this night can be the start of a successful school year.

Establish Parent and Teacher Communication at Back-to-School Night

It will be necessary to contact parents of middle school students throughout the school year. Open House is an excellent time to gather contact information. Prepare a few clipboards that ask for the student's name, a phone number, a parent email address, and the mailing address of the parent or guardian of each student. Ask the parents to fill out this sheet before going to the next classroom and kindly remind them to print neatly so the writing is legible. Place these sheets on a table near the door, and provide a few pens as well. Decorate a big poster board announcing your request, and set it up on the table so no one misses your effort at communication.

Parents will want to speak with you at open house. Stand at the door, and be sure to greet each family with a warm smile as they walk through the door. Harry Wong, author of The First Days of School, argues that standing at the door and greeting students and families makes an excellent first impression. Although this is not the time to discuss specific student progress or challenges, asking a few questions about the student or complimenting the student's personality or performance is always appreciated. If a parent pushes you to talk about student performance, invite her to come back for a conference within the week.
