Daniel Ellsberg, once labeled as the "most dangerous man in America" by Henry Kissinger, was prepared to spend most of his life in prison in order to expose deception of the American public by the Pentagon. Ellsberg was freed, but recently, at the age of 72, was arrested again along with 35 others at a March 20 rally protesting the treatment of Pfc. Bradley Manning, age 23.
Manning in Solitary Confinement
Manning has been held in solitary confinement in Quantico, Virginia, since May 2010, having been accused of sending massive amounts of government documents to Wikileaks. Besides solitary confinement, Manning has been placed on suicide prevention protocols which require that he be stripped nightly and his glasses taken away. According to the Guardian, Physicians for Human Rights has stated that psychiatrists at the brig are violating ethical principles by not calling for an end to Manning’s solitary confinement.
Protesters Support Bradley Manning
Several supporters, including Pentagon Papers whistle blower Daniel Ellsberg, and former Army Colonel Mary Ann Wright, spoke to about 400 demonstrators before the March 20, 2011 Quantico, Virginia rally, according to an InsideNova report. Demonstrators were arrested when they refused to move off US Highway 1 as ordered by police. Similar protests were held the day before at the White House. According to the Washington Post, at least eight other rallies were held around the world, including such cities as London, Sydney and Berlin. Jules Orkin, a 72 year-old protester and an army veteran, said, “I think he served a higher honor to expose things we’re doing wrong.”
