Based on the popular BBC-TV series The Thick Of It , director Armando Iannucci's darkly humorous satire In the Loop is one of five Academy Award nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay honors in this year's Oscar race. Iannucci shares the nomination with co-writers Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell and Tony Roche. After watching this British import on DVD discerning viewers will agree Academy voters made a wise choice.
Politician Thinks for Himself with Unforeseeable Consequences
In the Loop is set in the chaotic days leading up to the Iraq invasion. The film opens in London where Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi), the British Prime Minister's volatile Minister of Communications, is listening to a playback of a radio interview in which low level cabinet minister Simon Foster (Todd Hollander) has been caught off guard by a question about possible U.S. intervention in the Middle East.
Like an Olympic hopeful who jumps into the pool without first checking to see if there is water in it Foster casually replies that in his opinion war is "unforeseeable."
